Introduction

Welcome to the Island University, home of Izzy the Islander and the Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi First-Year Writing Program (FYWP).

This book, and the courses housed within our program (ENGL 1301, 1302, and 0101), challenge you to develop your skills and abilities, not just as a writer, but as a collaborator, researcher, and professional. To support your learning and demonstrate the value of the course, we focus on developing transferable skills that will facilitate your success in higher education and beyond.

This textbook was created and designed by us, utilizing OER resources and our own experiences as faculty to help you see that writing, language, and communication aren’t just static rules; they’re complex and nuanced tools that you can develop and apply in a variety of contexts both in and out of the classroom.

We have included traditional, pragmatic advice, but also incorporated a variety of materials associated with new and developing frameworks that have a tremendous impact on the field and your learning. Think AI and Digital Information Literacy! We hope that you will find the material that follows accessible, helpful, and hopefully, something that you will refer back to even after you leave our course.

So, forget what you thought you knew about writing, and get ready for Writing on the Island!
